International Curatorial Workshop: Curating and Social Change
The workshop will emphasise the question of how to connect social change with curatorial practice. The participants will be young curators and students of curatorial studies who have started to develop their own curatorial projects. In this way, the dialogue of the participants with different social, political, and cultural backgrounds will be challenging and fruitful in Hong Kong. The questions will be discussed in the workshop, and individual projects will be developed in discussion with the workshop leader Dorothee Richter.
Each evening, public events such as talks by curators and artists situated in Hong Kong will provide a view into the recent curatorial practice of curators and artists. The workshop will culminate in a presentation/exhibition of concepts by the workshop participants and a video installation showing excerpts from a video archive with interviews of 52 international curators
In demonstrations and civil rights marches, artists play often an important role as was witnessed in Hong Kong or in Taksim Square in Istanbul. Historically already Dada and Surrealism, and later on the Situationists, saw an urgent need to intervene in the social political fabric. Today, curators and artists still propose projects with an (imagined) influence on society and on the actual life of people. With which preconditions and in which specific contexts do curators and artists engage to make things happen? What does it mean to influence society? Does it mean to offer new models of living together? Does it mean to include notions of hospitality? Or does this mean to intervene more generally in the visual field? In which new way can curators and artists deal locally with global movements? How does art connect with social movements in specific situations? The aim of the public talks is to explore these strategies and contradictions as well as the possibilities and limitations of critical artistic and curatorial practice.
“International Curatorial Workshop: Curating and Social Change” will be including public talks with international curators and artists and, present the students concepts in form of an installation together with film material developed by Dorothee Richter and Ronald Kolb, a digital archive of interviews: CURATING – politics of display, politics of site, politics of transfer and translation.
This course will be joined by a number of students from the Postgraduate Programme in Curating, Zurich University of the Arts, helping young practitioners to broaden.
The workshop can be elected as one module towards a Diploma of Advanced Studies ‘Executive Education on Global Culture’ or can be taken individually.

About the faculty
Prof. Dr. Dorothee Richter, Professor in Contemporary Curating
Since 2005, she has been head of the Postgraduate Programme in Curating (MAS/CAS), www.curating.org, at the University of the Arts Zurich (ZHdK). She also co-founded with Susanne Clausen the “Research Platform for Curating, Practice-Based Doctoral Programme” a collaboration of the Postgraduate Programme in Curating and the Department of Fine Arts, University of Reading, now the “PhD in practice in curating”. From 1999 to the end of 2003, Richter was artistic director of the Künstlerhaus Bremen, where she curated a discursive programme based on feminist issues, urban situations, power relation issues, and institutional critique. She has worked as a curator ever since. Some of her curatorial projects: New Social Sculptures at Kunstmuseum Thun, (2012) Speculative Curating, Performative Interventions, Migros Museum, Zürich (2016/17).
Since 1998, Richter has held lecturing posts at the University of Bremen, the Merzakademie Stuttgart, the École des Beaux Arts in Geneva, and the University of Lüneburg alongside the travelling Exhibition / Archive “Curating Degree Zero Archive”. She has co-curated numerous symposia, like “Re-Visions of the Display” 2009, with Jennifer Johns, Sigrid Schade, Migros Museum in Zurich; “Institution as Medium. Curating as Institutional Critique?” in 2010 with Rein Wolfs; the symposium “Who is Afraid of the Public?” at the ICA London in 2013, with Elke Krasny, Silvia Simoncelli and the University of Reading; and the symposium with the Manifesta Journal and the Institute of Contemporary Art of the ZHdK “Third, fourth and fifth spaces: Curatorial practices in new public and social (digital) spaces” at the Migros Museum in 2013. One of her 90 publications is her PhD, Fluxus. Kunst gleich Leben? Mythen um Autorschaft, Produktion, Geschlecht und Gemeinschaft, and the new Internet platform www.on-curating.org, which presents current approaches to critical curatorial practice, with 32 Issues of OnCurating, both in print and online. Issue 29 was Curating in Feminst Thought, published with feminist curators united; Issue 30 Work, Migration, Memes and Personal Geopolitics war published as a parallel event of Manifesta Zurich.
In 2013, she released a film together with Ronald Kolb: Flux Us Now! Fluxus explored with a camera, which was screened for the first time at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart in April 2013, at the Migros Museum in Zurich, and different European art academies. In September 2013, she was appointed as mentor for POOL, (Collection of Hoffmann and Ringier) Zurich. In 2014, the Cultural Department of the city of Zurich appointed her as the curator/ programmer of half of Gasthaus zum Baeren / Museum Baerengasse, where she ran a programme together with young curators under the title “Curate Your Context”. As a collaborative project with the Centre of Art and Media (ZKM) Karlsruhe, Dorothee Richter and Ronald Kolb are working on a video archive of interviews with contemporary curators. The working title is “CURATING politics of display, politics of site, politics of transfer and translation”, with 52 detailed video interviews with internationally acclaimed curators, such as Peter Weibel, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Stella Rollig, Rein Wolfs, Beatrix Ruf, and Daniel Baumann and curatorial groups, working inbetween an activist, curatorial and political sphere.

Ronald Kolb
Ronald Kolb holds an MA in Visual Communications at Merz Akademie, University of Applied Arts, Design and Media, Stuttgart, Germany and runs the bureau of Gestaltung Biotop 3000 together with Volker Schartner since 2006. The bureau is engaged in publications for various artists and art institutions i.e. Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg, ifa (Institut for Foreign Affairs, Germany), Badischer Kunstverein, Donaueschinger Musiktage, ZKM and so forth.
He was an Associate Professor and lecturer at Merz Akademie, University of Applied Arts, Design and Media from 2009–2015 and is now Scientific Researcher at the Postgraduate Programme in Curating, Zurich University of the Arts.
In addition he works as a filmmaker and editor (i.e. Flux Us Now. Fluxus explored with a camera, www.fluxusnow.net). Since 2014 he works on a long-term project on curatorial practices together with Dorothee Richter.
He is Co-Publisher of the web journal On-Curating.org and honorary vice chairman of Künstlerhaus Stuttgart since 2014.
